Have you ever tried to imagine what your breath looks like on paper? For this journal exercise we are going to use our drawing media to illustrate our breath and capture how mindful breathing can change the way our breath feels both on paper and to ourselves.
What you will Need
All you need for this exercise is your sketchbook or a piece of paper and any drawing media you have like pens, pencils, colored pencils, crayons, markers- anything!
Lets get started!
First, pick up a drawing material and begin drawing what your breath feels like. You can use any type of marks- lines or shapes to capture this feeling. Draw about 5 breaths
Now lets take some yoga breaths together. A Yoga breath, or 4 -7 -8 breath, is when you Inhale over the course of 4 seconds, hold that breath for 7 seconds, and slowly exhale over the course of 8 seconds. Go through 4 yoga breaths.
After your 4th breath, pick up your drawing media and begin drawing your breath again as it returns to a normal. Draw about 5 breaths
Lets Reflect
Take a look at your drawing. Compare the marks you made before the yoga breath to those after the yoga breath. What is different about your marks? Think about how your body felt both before and after the yoga breaths. Can you see that difference in your drawing?
Breathing is something simple we do constantly, but by being intentional and mindful about how we are breathing we can change how we are feeling. Next time you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, try a few yoga breaths and see how you feel after.
